(일반논문) ‘여순사건’의 정명을 위한 시론 / 문수현

지금까지 사용된 ‘여순사건’에 대한 명칭은 20여 개이다. 사건 발생 이 후 여순반란사건이라는 명칭이 오래 쓰이다가 사회 전반의 민주화가 진행 되면서 여순사건이라는 이름이 쓰이고 있다. 민주·진보진영에서는 1980 년대부터 여순항쟁이라는 명칭을 쓰기 시작했으며, 현재는 여순사건과 여순항쟁이 혼용되고 있다.
역사적 사건의 이름은 전통적으로 ‘임진왜란’처럼 사건 발생 시기와 사 건의 성격을 조합하여 지었다. 그런데 여순사건이나 여순항쟁이라는 이름에는 시기는 없고, 발생 지역명이 들어가 있다. 그리고 여순사건이라는 이름은 특별법에서 사건 범위로 정한 전남, 전북, 경남 일부 지역을 담아 내지 못하므로 부적절하다. 그러므로 여순사건의 이름에서 여수·순천이 라는 지역명을 빼야 한다. 여순사건은 한두 지역에 국한된 사건이 아니기 때문이다.
‘반란’, ‘병란’, ‘폭동’은 권력 집단의 시각이 담긴 용어이므로 부적절하 며, ‘사변’, ‘사건’이라는 용어도 사건의 성격을 분명하게 드러내지 못하므 로 지양해야 한다. 그러면 어떤 이름이 적절한가? 지역명을 뺀 ‘시기+성 격’의 작명이 바람직하다. 현 단계에서는 ‘10·19항쟁’, ‘10·19민중항쟁’이 라는 이름이 무난할 것이다. 더 바람직한 명칭은 역사적 사건 당시 민중이 지향한 방향이 드러나는 ‘10·19통일항쟁’이다. 10·19는 1948년 남한만의 단독선거 실시, 단독정부 수립으로 인한 남북분단을 거부하고, 한반도에 자주독립국가와 통일정부수립을 염원하는 민중들의 집단적 저항이자 투 쟁이었기 때문이다. 
결론적으로 여순사건이나 여순항쟁보다 ‘10·19통일항쟁’이라는 명칭 이 가장 적절하다고 본다.

Abstract

An Argument for the Right Name of the ‘YeoSun Incident’

There have been over 20 different names used for the “YeoSun Incident” so far. The name “YeoSun Rebellion Incident” was commonly used for a long time after the incident, but as democratization progressed in society, the name “YeoSun Incident” began to be used. In the democratic and progressive camp, the name “YeoSun Struggle” has been used since the 1980s, and currently, “YeoSun Incident” and “YeoSun Struggle” are being used interchangeably.
Traditionally, the names of historical events were coined by combining the time of the event and the nature of the event, such as the “Imjin War.” However, the names “YeoSun Incident” and “YeoSun Struggle” do not contain a specific time, but instead include the name of the region where the incident occurred. Moreover, the name “YeoSun Incident” does not cover the areas of Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and some parts of Gyeongsangnam-do that were specified as the scope of the incident in the special law, so it is not appropriate. Therefore, the name of the region, Yeosu and Sunchon, should be removed from the name “YeoSun Incident” because it was not a localized incident in one or two areas.
The terms “rebellion,” “mutiny,” and “riot” are inappropriate as they reflect the perspective of those in power. The terms “insurrection” and “incident” also do not clearly reveal the nature of the event, so they should be avoided. So, what name is appropriate? A naming convention that combines “time+nature” without the name of the region is desirable. At this stage, the names “10·19 Struggle” and “10·19 People’s Struggle” would be appropriate. The more appropriate name is ‘10·19 Unification Struggle,’ which reveals the direction that the people aimed for during the historical event. ‘10·19’ was a collective resistance and struggle of the people who rejected the division of the Korean peninsula due to the exclusive election and establishment of a sole government in South Korea in 1948, and who aspired to the establishment of an independent and unified government in the Korean peninsula.
In conclusion, the name “10·19 Unification Struggle” is considered the most appropriate, rather than “YeoSun Incident” or “YeoSun Struggle”.
