(일반논문) 소설 「벌레 이야기」와 영화 <밀양>의 서사특성 고찰 / 서윤정

서사매체로서의 소설과 영화는 주제의 층위인 인물과 사건을 매개로 한 이야기와 ‘어떻게 말하는가’에 해당되는 서술 혹은 담론으로 구성된다. 소설과 영화는 각기 다른 매체의 특성 때문에 두 작품을 비교·감상하면, 서사 구조 및 창작 방법의 변형으로 서로 다른 매력을 표출하며 완전히 새 로운 작품이 탄생되기도 한다.
이 논문에서는 평론가 및 일반 대중 모두에게 폭넓은 작품성을 인정받 은 이청준의 소설 「벌레 이야기」와 이를 원작으로 한 이창동의 영화 <밀양>을 텍스트로 정하여 각 작품별 서사의 차이점을 비교해보고 특성을 고찰하 였다.
「벌레 이야기」가 진지하고 심오한 남편의 분석적인 증언을 다룬 서술형 식이라면, <밀양>은 세밀하고 능숙한 카메라 기법과 다양한 이미지로 인 간 이야기를 보여준다. 「벌레 이야기」에서 남편의 시선으로 아내의 절망과 고통을 제시한다면, <밀양>은 다각적이고 중립적인 카메라의 시선으로 신 애의 심리를 제시함을 알 수 있었다.
또한 소설이 미미한 인간과 절대자인 신, 가해자와 피해자의 비교적 단순한 대립구조라면, 영화는 종찬이라는 새로이 창조된 인물로 인하여 서사의 확장과 더불어 주제의 의미가 심화됨을 알 수 있었다. 이것은 이창 동의 세계관이 투영된 결과이다. 종찬의 등장으로 사랑이야기가 첨가되 었고, 그로 인해 구원은 높은 곳에 있는 신에 의해서가 아니라, 땅을 밟고 살아가는 평범한 인간에 의해 가능함을 밝히고 있다.
소설과 영화는 각기 다른 예술의 한 형태로 활용될 수 있으며, 소설과 영화 양자가 공존할 수 있는 쌍방향적 발전 방안을 모색할 필요가 있다. 그리하여 보다 적극적인 소설과 영화의 결합이 이루어지길 바란다. 또한 계속해서 소설과 영화의 연계성에 대한 학문적 연구가 활성화되기를 기대해 본다.

Abstract

A study on the narrative characteristics of the novel <The Story of Insect> and the movie <Secret Sunshine>

As narrative media, novels and films consist of a story mediated by characters and events, which are the layers of the subject, and a narrative or discourse corresponding to ‘how to say’. 
Because of the characteristics of novels and movies, when comparing and appreciating the two works, a completely new work is sometimes created by expressing different charms through the transformation of the narrative structure and creative method.
In this thesis, Lee Cheong-jun’s novel 「The Story of Insect」, which was recognized for its wide range of work by critics and the general public, and Lee Chang-dong’s movie 「Secret Sunshine」 based on it were selected as texts, and the differences in the narratives of each work were compared and their characteristics were considered. 
While 「The Story of Insect」 is a narrative format that deals with the husband’s analytical testimony in a serious and profound way, “Secret Sunshine” shows a human story through detailed and skillful camera techniques and various images. While 「The Story of Insect」 presents the wife’s despair and pain from the husband’s perspective, 「Secret Sunshine」 presents Shin-ae’s psychology through the perspective of a multifaceted and neutral camera.
Additionally, while the novel has a relatively simple structure of opposition between insignificant humans and the absolute God, perpetrators and victims, the film expands the narrative and deepens the meaning of the theme due to the newly created character named Jong-chan. This is the result of Lee Chang- dong’s world view being projected. With the appearance of Jongchan, a love story was added, revealing that salvation is possible not by a god on high, but by ordinary humans living on the ground.
Novels and movies can be used as different forms of art, and there is a need to find a two-way development plan that allows both novels and movies to coexist. In this way, I hope that a more active combination of novels and movies will be achieved. We also hope that academic research on the connection between novels and movies will continue to be revitalized.
